It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered South Africa’s first ‘Family Meeting,’ announcing a hard lockdown starting 27 March 2020. Five years since the country doom-scrolled Covid-19 updates, debated the ban on cooked chicken, and baked more bread than anyone ever thought possible. While many of those moments are best left in the past, there are some positive habits born out of Covid that should remain.
“So much has happened over the last five years, yet for many of us, 2020 still feels like yesterday,” says Candice Sessions, Laager Marketing Manager. “While we may still be recovering from the emotional impact of Covid-19, the Covid crisis also brought about some good habits that we can all continue to implement in our lives. That’s why we’re taking this opportunity to reflect back on the healthy habits from Covid times that we should all try to sustain.”
1. Prioritising Self-Care
Before 2020, working long hours and sacrificing personal time was the norm for many. Then the pandemic forced everyone to slow down and reassess. Suddenly, self-care wasn’t a luxury—it was a necessity. People started exercising at home, meditating, indulging in hobbies, and prioritising mental well-being. The result? Happier, healthier individuals who are more productive and balanced in all aspects of life.
2. Wearing Masks
While mask-wearing was undoubtedly one of the most controversial (enforced) habits from Covid, this practice did raise awareness around how quickly and easily germs spread through normal day-to-day contact. Many individuals have continued the habit of wearing masks when they’re sick, helping to prevent the spread of germs to those around them, which is of particular benefit to chronically ill and immunocompromised individuals.

3. Decluttering
Staring at the same four walls for months made many people realise just how much unnecessary stuff they had. Inspired by Marie Kondo, people embraced minimalism, donating, selling, or recycling items that no longer brought joy. The benefits? Less clutter, less stress, and a more peaceful home environment.
4. Showing Compassion
Covid-19 made many individuals more aware other people’s struggles. Checking in on elderly neighbours, preparing meals for those in need, and being mindful of spreading germs became everyday acts of kindness. Even today, it’s not unusual to see someone wearing a mask to protect others or lend a hand to someone in need. The spirit of community and compassion lives on.
5. Drinking Rooibos Tea
During the pandemic, people turned to Rooibos tea for its many health benefits. Packed with antioxidants, antiviral properties, and immune-boosting compounds, Rooibos became a staple in many households. And the trend has continued! Laager Rooibos, the only Rooibos tea bag endorsed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, has remained a favourite. With its ability to assist with lowering blood pressure, promoting bone health, and protecting against oxidative stress, it’s no wonder Rooibos tea has earned its spot as a daily wellness essential.

6. Hand Washing
One of the biggest wake-up calls during Covid-19? Realising how many people weren’t washing their hands properly or regularly! Thankfully, that changed for the better. People are now more mindful of hygiene, making hand washing a consistent and deliberate habit rather than an afterthought.

7. Online Shopping
Before 2020, online shopping in South Africa wasn’t as widespread. Fast forward to today, and eCommerce has skyrocketed, reaching R71 billion in 2024 and expected to surpass R100 billion by 2026. This has created more jobs and given online shoppers the gift of more time with their family and friends. From groceries to clothing—and, of course, Laager Rooibos tea—South Africans have fully embraced the convenience of shopping from home.
“There’s no doubt the last five years have been transformative. While the pandemic brought plenty of challenges, it also left us with valuable lessons and better habits. One of the simplest has been enjoying a cup of Laager Rooibos tea daily. Packed with health-boosting properties, it’s a small habit with a big reward!” concluded Sessions.
